Port Houston welcomed seven teachers from Houston Independent School District’s Career Readiness Department as part of their Teacher Externship Week June 26-29.
The educators visited the Port Houston Executive Building, maritime industry partners and participated in educational tours and hands-on activities. The group toured the port’s Bayport Container Terminal as well as several private companies and organizations along the Houston Ship Channel.
The HISD Externship Program provides a professional development vehicle for teachers to learn about various industries that will assist them in developing relevant curriculum content for their classrooms.
The externship week offers an opportunity for local companies to engage with city educators and the school district and participate in a highly visible community engagement activity.
“We are proud to partner with HISD on this important event. Together, we can promote education and the workforce to the future generation,” said Gilda Ramirez, Port Houston senior director for small business and education outreach.
