It takes unique skills and endurance to be a Houston Pilot, safely navigating some of the world’s largest ships in and out of the Houston Ship Channel, one of the most challenging waterways in the world.

Working with Shell Oil Company and the Buffalo Bayou Partnership, Port Houston helped create the Buffalo Bayou "Clean and Green" Program in 2007 – and this month, the partnership is celebrating the 10th anniversary of the program. Port Houston is proud of its success, which was spearheaded in large part by the efforts of former Port Commissioner Elyse Lanier.

This spring, Port Houston recognized the 40^th anniversary of the Barbours Cut Container Terminal. Since the opening of this facility in 1977, the port has grown to handle 68 percent of all container activity in the U.S Gulf of Mexico and has become one of the world’s busiest ports by waterborne cargo tonnage.

Port Houston welcomed seven teachers from Houston Independent School District’s Career Readiness Department as part of their Teacher Externship Week June 26-29.

Port Houston hosted Chinese officials from four ministries June 2 at the Bayport Container Terminal.

Port Houston’s FTZ and Economic Development department hosted 35 local economic development professionals for a workshop June 14. The workshop included a roundtable discussion, briefing and tour of the Bayport Container Terminal.

Port Houston staff and Port Commissioners Stephen DonCarlos and Roy Mease recently hosted mayors, council members and administration from 29 cities in the Greater Houston area for an educational tour along the Houston Ship Channel.
