Port Houston employees volunteered their time and efforts at Port Houston Elementary during Junior Achievement’s “JA Day.” The educational partnership allowed members of the port community to interact with over 240 students ranging from Kindergarten through fifth grade.

“The Junior Achievement program benefits the students at our local Port Houston Elementary and is an excellent way to positively interact with our youth and local communities. Port employees enjoy the opportunity to share their professional experiences with students and reinforcing the importance of education, work readiness, and financial literacy,” said Leslie Herbst, community relations manager for Port Houston.

Junior Achievement’s “JA Day” allows companies to interact with students and deliver a grade-specific curriculum over the course of a school day. Students learn the basic concepts of business, economics and how their education is significant to the workplace. The lesson contains fun activities that help students understand new concepts and explain the roles businesses play in their communities.

Port Houston Elementary students finished up the day with a surprise visit from the Port of Houston Authority Fire Department. Several crew members arrived in a Port of Houston fire truck and demonstrated fire safety while answering questions from a crowd of excited students.
