For the second year, Port Houston was the host port for the JOC Gulf Shipping Conference, a three-day industry forum organized by IHS Markit and JOC Events.

The Houston Area Urban League held a Small Business Development University workshop for small business owners and start-ups in the Houston region April 27. Creating a balanced business plan and having a reliable business strategy were topics discussed at the event.

In conjunction with the Port of Houston Partners in Maritime Education program, Port Houston sponsored graduation dinners for six high schools in four school districts adjacent to the Houston Ship Channel: Stephen F. Austin, Jack Yates, North Shore, Galena Park, LaPorte and Pasadena Dr. Kirk Lewis Career and Technical High School. These schools now recruit the best students for a four-year curriculum focused on maritime careers and skills.

 Port Houston was acknowledged as a top ranked special district in terms of online financial transparency in a report issued by the Texas Public Interest Research Group (Texas PIRG) in April 2017.

Port Houston Executive Director Roger Guenther received the Bronze Anchor Award at the Houston International Seafarers’ Center Maritime Gala May 6.

The Port Commission approved Port Houston’s fiscal year 2016 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) at a public meeting April 25.

The Port Houston Small Business and Maritime Education Outreach Department participated at the 2017 Maritime and Logistics Youth Expo held at the San Jacinto College Maritime Technology and Training Center April 28.

Port Houston employees celebrated this year’s Earth Day by joining Galveston Bay Foundation and dozens of other local volunteers at the 2017 Marsh Mania event. The program, now in its 18^th year, is a nationally recognized Texas Parks and Wildlife project focused on restoring marsh habitats.
