The Port of Houston Police Department presented 13 bikes to students at Yolanda Black Navarro Middle School, formerly known as Jackson Middle School, Dec. 12. The school’s administrator, Vice Principal Michael Hutchins, will distribute the bikes to students with perfect attendance and distinguished achievements.

Port’s TradeLink Workshop Focuses on Houston Exports
Port Houston held its quarterly TradeLink workshop Dec. 13 at the Conroe Regional Chamber of Commerce. The seminar was focused on Houston exports, introducing small and mid-sized regional businesses to the basics of exporting, including costs, risks, commercial transactions, finding overseas markets, trade financing, documentation and logistics.

Houston Pilots Announce 2017 Executive Board
The Houston Pilots, responsible for navigating some of the world’s largest ships on the Houston Ship Channel and into the Port of Houston, held their annual election Dec. 7. Captain Robert Shearon was re-elected to lead the organization as Presiding Officer in 2017. Members of the Executive Committee include Captain Sean Arbogast and Captain Matthew Glass.

Port Chairman Receives Honorary Distinction from Princess of Belgium
Chairman of the Port Commission, Janiece Longoria was bestowed, by royal decree, the distinction of Commander of the Order of the Crown by HRH Princess Astrid of Belgium at the Port of Antwerp and Port Houston’s joint supply chain seminar December 8.. The theme of the seminar was “building the supply chain of the future.”

Port Participates in Junior Achievement "JA Inspire" Event
Port Houston’s Maritime Education Outreach department participated in the Junior Achievement of Southeast Texas’ “JA Inspire” event December 7-8 at the George R. Brown Convention Center. More than 10,000 middle school students from the greater Houston region attended to learn about potential careers, experience, benefits and certifications available. Participating school districts included Deer Park, Galena Park, Houston, La Porte and Alief ISDs.

Lone Star Harbor Safety Committee Dredging Group Evaluates Soundings
The Lone Star Harbor Safety Committee (LSHSC)’s Dredging and Marine Construction Subcommittee met at Port Houston’s Executive Building for their final meeting of 2016. The group is chaired by Port Houston Project Manager David Casebeer, who reported that the dredging of the Bayport Channel is scheduled to be completed in late December. Orion Marine Group is the dredging contractor on the project.

Port Receives Our Great Region Excellence Award
Port Houston’s Small Business and Maritime Education programs received the Our Great Region Excellence Award from the Houston-Galveston Area Council (H-GAC) Dec. 2. The award is the highest-level of recognition from the organization, which covers 13 surrounding counties, including Harris County.
