Port Houston recognized the 10-year anniversary of the Bayport Container Terminal this February. Owned and operated by the port, the Bayport Container Terminal is considered the most modern and environmentally friendly container terminal on the U.S. Gulf Coast today.

“We are proud of the growth of the Bayport Terminal since its opening a decade ago. Its success and positive impact on jobs and the economy is due to the leadership of our Port Commission, staff and all of our partners,” said Port Houston Executive Director Roger Guenther. “There is an amazing future ahead of us that will bring tremendous opportunities as well as challenges that we will continue to tackle and keep Port Houston and our busy waterway at the forefront of prosperity.  We are ready for the future.”

The Bayport Container Terminal is the sister to the Barbour's Cut Container Terminal, which was among one of the first container terminals on the U.S. Gulf Coast when it opened in 1977. Now, Barbour's Cut is undergoing a massive modernization 40 years later, while Bayport marks the evolution of the container business along the Gulf of Mexico with major highlights such as nine ship-to-shore cranes, 39 RTGs, eight weekly vessel calls and 25,000 truck gate moves a week.

The terminal was originally designed to have a total of seven container berths with the capacity to handle 2.3 million TEUs on the complex, which includes 376 acres of container yard and a 123-acre intermodal facility. Features today include a state-of-the-art terminal operating system providing expedited visits for trucks and web based customer interfaces between shippers, truckers and ocean carriers expanding transparency through logistics.

The port’s Barbour's Cut Terminal will have its 40-year anniversary in July. A press release on the Bayport Anniversary can be found here.
