The Port of Houston Authority’s environmental policy was recently updated and approved by the Port Commission at a public meeting March 21.

Since the first environmental policy was approved in 1991, the port has been committed to conducting operations using a systematic approach to environmental management in order to help protect and preserve the natural environment.

The updated policy simply states the port will:
• Comply with environmental laws and regulations
• Create business practices to prevent pollution and support sustainability
• Communicate, engage and collaborate with stakeholders
• Commit to being a recognized maritime industry leader in environmental stewardship
• Continuously improve environmental performance

“We amended the language of the policy to further communicate the port’s environmental commitments in a simpler, yet more comprehensive manner,” said Leah Oberlin, Environmental Affairs Director.

“The development of the new policy included the port’s staff-level environmental committee and the core and senior management teams established under the Environmental Management Program. This was a team effort that we believe is in the best interest of the future of the port.”
